This is because most people live in their minds most of the time instead of living in their bodies. Our body is always in the here and now, in the present moment. Life happens only in the here and now. Whereas we are stuck with a habitual tendency to always be engaged in mental activity that concerns either our past or our future.
In being completely engrossed with the thoughts in our mind concerning our past or our future, we become completely unconscious of our body most of the time. Breathing is happening in our body all the time but we are completely unaware of this process happening in real time as a felt sensation of it while it is happening. I call this as living unconsciously because we are unaware that life is happening in our body right now.
It has become a deeply ingrained habit, the habit of living in our mind, the habit of being unaware. From this stand point it seems like there is plenty of time in the future to fix our health issues but right now there are more important things to be engaged with. Since it has become such a deeply ingrained habit, that future time when we can fix our health never comes until it is too late.
To recognise this habit and to replace it with a more healthy habit is not easy. It requires a gradual, long process like a long journey. I call this journey an Awareness Journey. I have written and recently published a book on this.

Our ancestors enjoyed wholesome sleep despite the otherwise hostile environment in which they lived.
