I am not a psychologist although I am a founding member of a psychological services organisation. I am a spiritual mentor and I lead workshops on Energy Psychology and I would like to answer this question as a layman rather than a professional.
The most awesome fact about psychology is that almost everyone is afraid of openly seeing a psychologist. Our mental health is one of the biggest secrets we would like to hold and most of us are afraid to even find out our own state of mental health. But it is not so with respect to our physical health. We have no hesitation to go consult a doctor even for simple things like a common cold or body pains. Many of us are proud of our physical ailments and identify ourselves with our sufferings such as “I am a diabetic”.
Why is mental fitness not given the same status and importance as physical fitness? A psychological counsellor or a therapist needs to be seen as a fitness trainer and everyone needs regular sessions with one. Nobody enjoys perfect mental fitness, we are all suffering and can get help to enjoy a better fitness. Simple things such as stress, confusion, indecisiveness, lack of mental clarity, lack of mental peace, lack of confidence, emotional turmoil, can be understood better and managed with more ease to help us lead a smoother life when we talk to a therapist regularly.
Another awesome fact about psychology is that it actually deals more with Emotional health rather than Mental health.
Although psychology as a science has made major strides since its birth about a hundred and fifty years ago, human society has not yet started talking about emotional awareness and enabling children to start learning it early in their lives. Children need to learn about emotions and mental health along with physical anatomy and biology. It would be really awesome when this happens with mainstream primary education.
