Awareness Journey

How can understanding your own emotional triggers help in preventing stress or burnout in high-pressure environments?

In my opinion, no amount of understanding or knowledge can help in preventing stress or burnout in high-pressure environments. Why? Because the one that understands and knows is usually absent during high-pressure environments.

One gets taken over by automatic limbic reactions and in such a situation the knowledge is useless. If understanding or knowledge was enough, there would be no addicts because everyone fully understands the harmful effects of whatever it is that they are addicted to but still end up remaining addicted.

What then can help to prevent stress and burnout? Emotional Awareness. Awareness is a state of mind that is above the normal Thinking Mind. Thinking about one’s emotions is very different from being Aware of one’s emotions. An Aware state of mind comes into being when the Thinking Mind slows down or stops its engagement with thoughts and quietens.

But the Thinking Mind by itself is incapable of slowing down because it is conditioned (or addicted) to remaining in a heightened state of restlessness with its constant engagement with thoughts. How then could one cultivate Emotional Awareness? By consistently and regularly practicing a few effective Grounding practices.

There are many practices that you can use as a portal to switch to this state of quiet Awareness from the usual restless, distracted and thinking state of mind. Some of the effective practices that I teach are, Focussed Gazing and Conscious breathing, Deep Crossing and other gently body movements in sync with the breath that I refer to as Energy Movements, Gentle flexing and stretching movements that I refer to as SelvanS 30 Yoga, etc.

You can find resources to learn all of these on my website or in the various articles that I have published on my Quora Profile or in my book titled INNER ALCHEMY.

In the beginning it is only possible to remain in this aware state for a few seconds. Consistent practice would gradually improve Physical and Emotional Awareness that would go a long way in reducing stress and possible burnout in high pressure environments. It might even eventually help in guiding you away from such environments to live a life of peace and fulfilment.
