What are some ways to protect yourself from negative energy while meditating?

The need for protection arises when we look at us as a separate entity holding a separate identity and maintaining a defensive stance. Meditation, is a practice of active acceptance and allowing. Because we can only continue to remain a disengaged witness to all the arising phenomena in the moment, by holding the stance of active acceptance. Letting go of our ingrained defensive stance and choosing instead to adopt a stance of active acceptance is meditation. This very shift in our mental stance protects us from negative energies in the space around us.

The physical world that we perceive with our five physical senses is very different from the underlying world of energy vibrations on which it rests. In the physical world we do need to protect ourselves as an individual and as a collective from unintended agression from outside. But in the energy dimension, although each person’s energy body is a bio-field around the physical body, it is all interconnected and part of a single universal consciousness. The one consciousness is expressing itself in multi-various forms. Bringing awareness to our energies and giving permission to all the other energies outside of our energies to be as it is without expectations, makes it impossible for those energies to disturb our energies.

In other words, negative energies outside our bio-field of energies can only bother us when we hold a judgment and rejection of those energies. When we do so, we get confused between passive acceptance and active acceptance and go back to our stance of defensiveness.

It is a very difficult to understand this conceptually although it is very simple to realise experientially. But there are a few rare cases in human history when the concept of according permission becomes the best protection even in the physical world. Switzerland is an example. This was one country in the middle of Europe unaffected by two devastating world wars in the twentieth century. The underlying stance that worked here was that of active acceptance rather than a defensive stance and this stance was not adopted by that country as a strategy during the war but it existed much before, as their way of life.
