Awareness Journey

What kind of activities drain you?

Activities do not usually drain anyone. It is only constant, repetitive engagement with one kind of activity without respite and without even being able to stop that one gets drained. The only activity that almost the entire humanity is compulsively engaged with is mental activity.

These include the monologues in our mind with ourselves, the dialogues we carry out mentally with an imaginary person, the voices of others in our mind telling us what not to do, memories of past events, worries about the future, fantasising, imagining, dreaming, planning, working, calculating, computing, watching something (videos) listening to something (such as podcasts), reading, studying, focusing, concentrating, paying attention, etc. We are habituated to this and so it seems to be happening effortlessly and automatically, although we are doing it. We don’t know how to stop it.

Our minds are exhausted with this constant unstoppable activity and when we go through life in this state of mental exhaustion, every activity would drain is sooner than later. We do not even know how to find out if our mind is tired or not. When our physical body is tired we immediately recognise it and take rest. Physical rest includes things like just sitting and relaxing, taking a nap, a full night sleep, having a body massage, having a long warm bath, etc. But our mind still continues with its mental activity during most of these physical resting times. Even during sleep we continue mental activity in the form of dreaming.

Meditation or any other practice of body movements or energy movements or gentle breathing practices during which our minds can rest quietly without engaging in any of the above activities would refresh and energise us deeply.
